clean home, clear mind

An upholstered dining chair being cleaned with a small brush

Dining chair seats collect crumbs, sauces, and the occasional wine spill. Cleaning them is easier than it looks, as long as you identify the fabric first and proceed gently.

Read the care code

Look for a tag under the seat. W means water-based cleaners are safe, S means solvent-based only, WS allows either, and X means vacuum only. Follow it strictly.

Start dry

Vacuum with an upholstery attachment, including the creases and under the cushion. Use a soft brush to loosen dried crumbs first.

Spot-clean safely

  • Test any cleaner on a hidden area and wait until it dries.
  • Dampen a white cloth with mild soapy water, wring it well, and blot the stain.
  • Work from the outside of the stain inward.
  • Blot with a clean damp cloth to remove soap, then dry with a towel.

Avoid soaking

Too much moisture can leave water rings and dampen the foam beneath. Let chairs dry fully in a ventilated room, away from direct heat.

Protect for the future

Consider a fabric protector spray after cleaning, and tuck napkins or chair pads under young children. A regular vacuum keeps seats fresh between deeper cleans.
