Autumn is the natural moment to put the garden to rest and the shed in order. Tools that are cleaned and stored properly last for decades, and a tidy shed makes spring a pleasure.
Clean the tools
Scrape off soil, wash blades, and dry them thoroughly. Wipe metal parts with a rag dipped in light oil to prevent rust. Sharpen shears and spades with a file or whetstone.
Hang what you can
Install wall hooks or a rail for long-handled tools, and draw outlines on the board so every item has a place. Keeping tools off the floor prevents damp and accidents.
Sort and store supplies
- Store seeds and bulbs in labeled paper bags in a cool, dry place.
- Seal fertilizers and chemicals in their original containers, high and away from children.
- Empty and drain hoses, and store them coiled.
- Clean pots and stack them by size.
Plant your bulbs
Now is the time to plant spring bulbs such as daffodils and tulips. Set them pointed side up at about three times their height in depth, and water lightly.
Check the shed itself
Look for leaks in the roof, gaps in the walls, and signs of pests. Repair them before the cold sets in, and your garden will be ready to wake in spring.
