A row of herbs on a bright windowsill is one of the prettiest and most practical decorations a kitchen can have. It brings life to the room through the darker months, and gives you fresh flavour within arm’s reach.
Choose the right herbs
Parsley, chives, mint, thyme, and basil all do reasonably well indoors. Basil needs the most light and warmth, while mint and chives are forgiving. Start with young plants rather than seeds for quicker results.
Pots and style
Terracotta pots are classic and breathe well. Use saucers to protect the sill, and keep the pots in a consistent material and finish for a calm look. A narrow tray or wooden board can unify them.
Care basics
- Place them in the brightest window, ideally south-facing.
- Water when the top of the soil feels dry, and drain excess water.
- Rotate the pots weekly so growth is even.
- Pinch off flowers and snip regularly to encourage bushiness.
Keep it practical
Label each pot with a small tag or stake. Avoid placing pots directly against cold glass in freezing weather, which can damage roots.
Enjoy the harvest
Use the herbs often. Regular picking keeps plants healthy, and the scent and colour make an ordinary kitchen feel a little more alive.
