Whether to remove shoes at the door is a question that divides households and cultures. Neither policy is right or wrong, but handling it graciously makes guests comfortable and keeps floors clean.
For hosts: say it early
If you prefer shoes off, mention it in the invitation or greet guests with a warm “We take our shoes off here, please make yourself comfortable.” Do not wait until someone is halfway across the carpet.
Make it easy
- Provide a bench or chair near the door.
- Offer a rack, tray, or basket for shoes.
- Keep clean slippers or socks in a few sizes for guests.
- Think about guests who find it difficult to bend or who wear formal footwear.
For guests: follow the lead
Notice whether shoes are lined up by the door, and ask if unsure. Wear clean, presentable socks, especially to homes where this is the custom. If you have a medical reason to keep shoes on, say so politely.
When the host says to keep them on
Wipe your feet well and accept gracefully. Never insist on removing shoes against the host’s wishes.
Keep it light
The purpose of the rule is care for the home, not judgment of the guest. A warm tone makes the custom feel like part of the welcome.
