The holiday season fills calendars quickly, and the best invitations are those that arrive early. If you plan to host a party in late autumn or winter, October is the moment to begin.
Timing
Send invitations four to six weeks ahead for holiday parties, and earlier if guests may travel. A paper card or a thoughtful digital invitation both work, depending on the formality.
What to include
- The occasion, date, start time, and likely end time.
- The address, with parking or entry notes.
- The dress code, if any.
- Whether partners and children are invited.
- A reply-by date and how to respond.
Write warmly
Use a friendly tone and be specific. A line such as “Light supper and drinks” tells guests whether to eat beforehand. Avoid hinting at gifts unless the event is specifically for gifts.
Be inclusive and discreet
Invite entire groups of colleagues or neighbours to avoid hurt feelings, and do not discuss the guest list in front of those not invited.
Follow up kindly
A few days after the reply date, send a gentle reminder to anyone who has not responded. A welcoming, clear invitation sets the tone for a lovely party.
