Not every home has a formal dining room, and many do not need one. A small nook with a round table can be the most pleasant place in the house for breakfast, homework, and long conversations. Autumn is the ideal season to dress it with warmth.
Choose a round table
A round table has no corners to bump into and makes conversation easier because everyone faces one another. A pedestal base leaves extra legroom, and a 90-centimetre diameter seats four comfortably.
Hang a pendant low
Centre a pendant light above the table, about 70 to 80 centimetres from the surface. Choose a warm-white bulb and a dimmer to adjust the mood from morning to evening.
Dress the table for the season
- A bowl of small pumpkins or pears as a centrepiece.
- A linen runner or napkins in rust, oatmeal, or olive.
- A single candle or two in simple holders.
Add seating with softness
Cushions or sheepskins on wooden chairs make long meals more comfortable. Mismatched chairs in a similar tone feel collected and relaxed.
Keep the surroundings calm
Use a small rug under the table that extends beyond the chairs, and keep nearby surfaces clear. A single piece of art on the wall behind completes the nook.
