Being invited to someone’s home for the first time is a compliment, and an opportunity to make a good impression. The rules are simple, and most come down to consideration.
Before you go
Reply promptly, mention any dietary needs, and ask if you can bring anything. If the host declines, bring a small gift anyway.
Arriving
Arrive within fifteen minutes of the stated time, never early. Greet your host warmly, follow their lead on shoes and coats, and introduce yourself to other guests.
At the table
- Wait for the host to sit or start.
- Try a little of everything offered.
- Keep your phone put away.
- Compliment the food sincerely.
Accidents happen
If you spill something, apologize briefly and offer to help, then let it go. A relaxed response matters more than the spill.
Leaving well
Offer to help clear, but accept if the host declines. Leave at a sensible hour, thank them in person, and follow up with a short note or message the next day. Reciprocate with an invitation when the moment is right.
