Few things are more disappointing than pulling a glass from the dishwasher only to find it milky and dull. In most cases, the cause is simple mineral film or detergent residue, and the cure is straightforward.
Film or etching?
Soak a cloudy glass in white vinegar for five minutes. If the cloudiness disappears, it was mineral film from hard water. If it remains, the glass is etched, which is permanent damage caused by soft water, too much detergent, or very high heat.
Fixing mineral film
- Place a cup of white vinegar on the top rack and run a hot cycle.
- Add rinse aid to the dispenser to help water sheet off.
- Run the cycle with a dishwasher descaler monthly if your water is hard.
Prevent etching
Use the recommended amount of detergent, not more. Do not pre-rinse glasses so thoroughly that detergent has nothing to bind to. Avoid the hottest cycle for delicate crystal, which is often better washed by hand.
Load carefully
Place glasses so they do not touch, and angle them so water drains. Clean the filter and spray arms regularly for proper circulation.
Finish by hand if needed
For special glasses, polish with a dry lint-free cloth after washing. A little care keeps wine glasses and tumblers sparkling for years.
