clean home, clear mind

A front porch with chrysanthemums, a doormat and a lantern

A porch is the handshake of a house. A few seasonal touches in October make it feel cared for and welcoming, without the need for elaborate displays. Aim for tidy, layered, and a little unexpected.

Begin with a clean sweep

Sweep the steps, wash the doormat, and wipe down the door and handle. Fix any loose hardware. A clean base makes any decoration look better.

Pot some colour

Chrysanthemums, ornamental kale, and asters thrive in cooler weather. Group pots in odd numbers of varied heights on either side of the door, using planters in matching or complementary tones.

Add warm light

Place a lantern by the door, using a safe LED candle or a battery-powered light. Warm light at dusk looks inviting and helps guests find the step.

Layer simple extras

  • A woven or coir mat with a modest pattern.
  • A few pumpkins or gourds in natural tones.
  • A wreath of dried grasses or eucalyptus on the door.

Keep it maintained

Deadhead the flowers, water the pots, and sweep leaves regularly. A modest porch that is well kept beats a crowded one that is not.
