If your coffee tastes flat or your machine takes longer to brew, mineral scale is the likely culprit. Water leaves deposits inside the heating element and pipes, and over time they affect both flavour and performance. A regular descale is simple and cheap.
How often to descale
In hard-water areas, descale monthly. In soft-water areas, every two to three months is enough. Follow your manufacturer’s guidance for espresso machines and pod systems.
Drip machines
- Fill the reservoir with equal parts white vinegar and water.
- Place a filter in the basket and run half the cycle, then pause for thirty minutes.
- Finish the cycle, then discard the liquid.
- Run two or three cycles of clean water to rinse away any vinegar taste.
Espresso and pod machines
Use the descaling solution recommended by the maker, and follow its instructions exactly. Vinegar can damage seals in some models.
Clean the removable parts
Wash the carafe, basket, and lid with warm soapy water each day or two. Wipe the exterior and the warming plate to prevent stains.
Use better water
Filtered water slows buildup and improves taste. Combined with a monthly descale, it keeps your morning cup consistently good.
