clean home, clear mind

A smoke alarm and fire extinguisher in a home hallway

We invest in beautiful homes, yet often neglect the simple devices that protect them. A short annual safety check takes about fifteen minutes and could make all the difference in an emergency.

Test your alarms

Press the test button on every smoke and carbon monoxide alarm. Replace batteries yearly, and replace the entire unit according to the manufacturer’s date, usually every ten years.

Check the extinguisher

Keep one in the kitchen and another near the exit. Confirm that the pressure gauge is in the green zone, the pin is intact, and everyone knows where it is.

Review your escape plan

  • Identify two ways out of every bedroom.
  • Agree on a meeting place outside.
  • Practice once a year with children.
  • Keep exits clear of furniture and clutter.

Look at electrical and heating items

Check for frayed cords, overloaded sockets, and blocked heaters. Clean the lint trap and vent of the dryer, which is a common fire source.

Set a yearly date

Add the check to your calendar, and tie it to a memorable date such as the end of daylight saving. A little vigilance gives lasting peace of mind.
