clean home, clear mind

A range hood filter soaking in a kitchen sink with a brush

The range hood filter quietly captures grease from every meal you cook. Left unwashed, it clogs, reduces airflow, and becomes a fire hazard. Fortunately, cleaning it is quick and rewarding.

How often

Wash metal mesh filters every one to three months, depending on how much you fry or sear. Charcoal filters, used on recirculating hoods, cannot be washed and should be replaced according to the manufacturer.

The method

  • Switch off the hood and slide out the filter carefully.
  • Fill the sink with very hot water and a good squirt of degreasing washing-up liquid.
  • Add a quarter cup of baking soda for extra lift.
  • Soak for ten to fifteen minutes, then scrub with a soft brush.
  • Rinse with hot water and dry completely before replacing.

Clean the hood itself

While the filter soaks, wipe the underside and exterior of the hood with the same solution. Stainless steel should be wiped along the grain and polished dry.

A note on aluminium

Some aluminium filters darken with strong alkaline products or in the dishwasher. If in doubt, follow the manual and use mild soap.

Make it a habit

Add it to your seasonal cleaning list, and always run the fan while cooking. A clean filter keeps the kitchen air fresher and the cooker safer.
